History of the City of Salta

The Inca Empire occupied these earth from century XII, coming from the region of the Titicaca lake, and in its apogee (century XV) it extended by the Andes (North Argentinean) integrating the province of the Collasuyo. Its dominion collapsed with the arrival of the Spanish conquerors, at the beginning of century XVI.

The city of Salta was founded the 16 of April of 1582 by Don Hernando de Lerma, with the intention of providing the communicationses between Lima and the government of Tucumán.

To the Spaniards and the Creoles the dispute with the natives by the dominion from these earth was not easy.

After 1810, the interruption of the commerce with the high Peru and the war by independence produced the deterioration of the economy of the Northwest. Salta was between two fires and it was the barrier of containment of the Spaniards whom from the North they tried to enter these earth. In these years the performance of general Martín Miguel de Güemes to defend the border.

To more than four centuries of his foundation, Salta is today a symbiosis of history and its landscape.
