History of Usuhaia

In 1520 the expedition headed by Hernando de Magallanes arrived at Land the Great Island of the Fire when it looked for the passage the Pacific Ocean. The navigators observed fire and smoke on the northern coasts, by that episode baptized to the Island like "Land of the Fire".

The 12 of October of 1884, the expeditionary division to the South Atlantic of the Argentina Navy, found a Subprefecture on the Bay of Ushuaia.

Due to the commentaries on the gold existence in the zone it begins to arrive people who soon would go away. With the construction of the Military prison and Jail of Reincidents of the Land of the Fire, Ushuaia fills definitively.
